Tis the season to start thinking about interior décor.
Imagine your favorite room all dressed up, your kitchen, bedroom, laundry room, or your office revamped to a more functional and beautiful space to work, one that is enjoyable to go to each day. Perhaps it’s your kid’s room or baby nursery that needs a bit more spicing up, but you’re just not exactly sure how to do that.
The question I hear is “Why would a person hire an interior decorator versus doing it themselves?”
Over the holidays, I was in a very beautiful home with one striking problem that the owner just did not know how to fix, even though she had lived there at least 10 years. There sat the problem, year after year she would look at it, ponder, then forget about it…. but it was always there… She loved her home but very much disliked “the problem wall”. She asked me what I thought of the wall, and what could possibly help to fix the decor dilemma. I told her within a couple of minutes several solutions to fix it and she liked the ideas, and said she had not ever thought of that! If I had not been trained in how to handle such walls, it would have stumped me too as it was an unusual shape. Instantly the conversation went to her lighting… again… flanking “the wall”. She did not know what to do about the lighting there and had always wanted to change it but never had. Then it went to the lighting in the living room, which was really all but nonexistent, however she wasn’t sure what type of lighting would make “the room brighter overall”. How do I brighten up this sitting area, brighten that area, and that area… soon she was talking about all of the lighting in her living room and adjoining stairwell, including overhead, floor and table lighting. I mentioned some other types of new lighting to her as well to give her outside of the box ideas. The conversation then went to “I’d like to change the lighting in the whole house actually!” This was all during a wine and cheese visit. Can you imagine if she had an actual consult?
You see, this is why people need the expertise of an interior decorator, even for one day as a consult. Literally there are hundreds/thousands of choices out there, for something as simple as a piece of art, to accessories, to lighting, flooring, area rugs, throw pillows… and that just scratches the surface. We see solutions to complexities. (Be sure to visit our online store for some really nifty pieces as well!)
Where you may only see what is in stores, we are trained in the “why” of décor and follow those rules.
It makes a huge difference coming from that perspective.
The point of hiring an interior decorator is you literally save time and money to scope out your planned area of décor, create a mood or sample board for approval, source materials and accessories, lighting etcetera and save you the hassle of buying the wrong things, or not quite right. It’s best to put your funds where you know they will make immediate and best improvements, rather than endlessly making the wrong choices or not quite right choices. For instance, you may love a very modern looking floor lamp, but it’s totally not the right style or height for the room. It’s great but seems out of place. You may love throw cushions in a pretty, bright, red jewel color, full of glitzy embellishment, but it is totally not the right cushion for your woodsy feeling living room.
Interior decorators can also choose finishes for homes being built, they can redesign an area in an existing home that you particularly don’t like such as a kitchen, powder room, bathroom, bedroom, etcetera, and can help choose paint colors; the all important base template for any room. Interior decorators bring all aspects of design into consideration working with furnishings and accessories you currently have, weeding out the ones to keep and adding in new ones. All this while keeping your budget in mind. These can be small jobs such as one room or large jobs such as an entire home.
It’s so worth it to consider hiring an interior decorator to give you full value for your project?
Everyone could use an interior decorator. Whether it’s a multimillion dollar home or a tiny 2 room bungalow, décor is found everywhere. Make your home a place of peace and rest. A place you wake up to everyday and just fall in love with it all over again. Make it your place of comfort for you and your family.
In 2018, I wish you all the very best and hope to encourage you along to take this step, find a good decorator with reasonable rates and go for it! I for one, would love to help you on that journey, so let’s get started!
